Matisse Papercuts Bird Brooch
Matisse described the medium of cut-outs as “drawing with scissors”, and said “cutting straight into colour reminds me of the direct carving of the sculptor”. As he was often bed-bound due to his ill-health, he considered his cut-outs to escape the confines of his bed and find a new form of expression, saying that he had made a little garden around himself where he could walk, and he’d found himself in the work.
This piece is inspired by the birds that Matisse so often included in his work, showing two white birds inserted into a blue field, literally “cutting into colour”. It is cut from acrylic and layered to give a 3D effect. A stainless steel brooch pin is attached to the back.
